It’s a little late, but Apple is now demanding they obtain the rights to the iPad3.com domain. Of course, there is no such thing as the iPad 3, but much like the public’s insistence on using the moniker “iTouch” for Apple’s iPod Touch, many continue to refer to the new, Retina’d iPad as the iPad 3. according to DomainNameWire.com, Apple has asked an arbitration panel to hand over the ownership rights to the parked iPad3.com domain.
Filing a case with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under the uniform domain name dispute resolution policy (UDRP), Apple is hoping to take control of the parked domain.
“Apple filed a case with World Intellectual Property Organization under the uniform domain name dispute resolution policy (UDRP). iPad3.com was registered in January 2010 and is currently owned by a company called Global Access in Isle of Man. Global Access is no stranger to cybersquatting complaints, having lost challenges by big companies such as AllState, AOL, and MasterCard. The domain name is currently parked. Its traffic is rotated to various domain parking services with Above.com,” the report reads, according to IBNLive.com.
It is not uncommon for Apple to seek control of any domain involving their products. As their products are announced, some domain name parkers will begin to purchase possible future product domains in the hopes Apple will pay large sums of money to obtain these domains. Recently, Apple filed a similar UDRP case with the WIPO to obtain the rights to iPhone5.com, another possibly fictional device.
The difference between these 2 domains, however, is content. while the page at iPad3.com is devoid of any substance, the owners of iPhone5.com (purchased in 2008) had been using the site to discuss smartphones and iPhone rumors. Apple now owns the site and has subsequently shut it down, despite a small and meager protest by the sites owners.
It’s all a part of Apple’s penchant for uniformity: though they’ll likely never use iPad3.com or iPhone5.com, they like the option of being able to use these names, should the need arise. Owning these domains also ensures that other site owners won’t use Apple’s products as a gateway to malicious or pornographic sites, as citizens of the Internet are often wont to do.
Apple owns many domains which include the names of their products. For example, MacBookPro.com, iMac.com, and MacBookAir.com are all Apple owned and operated, and lead to the corresponding product’s website. interestingly, even though they are fighting for control of iPad3.com, Apple doesn’t own the basic iPad.com domain.
If Apple wants to own every iPad-and-some-number variation domain, they may have some work ahead of them. according to DomainNameWire.com, even iPad25.com has been registered.
When Apple fought to gain control of iPhone5.com, many started to wonder if this was a hint as to the name of the next iPhone. in 2007, amidst new rumors of an Apple branded Tablet, similar discussion began to emerge when Apple purchased the rights to iSlate.com. Looking ahead, Apple may have to also purchase the rights to AppleTV.com, as the domain is currently owned by netpia.com. That is, of course, unless netpia is another pseudonym used by Apple to disguise their true identity, a trick the company has employed more than once before.
